2015 Teacher of the Year

We did it!  Thank you for a wonderful school year.  With our hard work, I was recognized in front of all the faculty and staff of Kerrville ISD as the Secondary Teacher of the Year!  Thank you to all my students, especially my 5th period kiddos who had their class video-taped. We all worked very hard, and this is validation of the success we saw in the classroom.  I am so proud of all of you, now-8th graders! Have a terrific summer, and I'll see you all next year!

Research Paper

Alright, first thing's first...
I have extended the due date for the Stock Research Paper to Tuesday, May 26th.  This should be the most efficient way for everybody to have access to the work they have done from home, as well as allowing me to see the progress that has been made at the point of the original due date.

I realize that I told you to take certain steps that include a spreadsheet, but being the technologically savvy teacher I am, I have found a much better, much easier method for you to get to and copy/paste your work for you to complete at home.

highlight, copy, and paste your text into the respective boxes below.

Westing Game- Chapter 6-10 Quiz Review

This week, we will be finishing and quizzing over chapters 6-10 in The Westing Game.  I recorded myself playing the game so you could review as many times as possible.  You can additionally play the Kahoot Review game here.  You have to click on the link from a computer, not from your phone or tablet. I hope the scores on this quiz are MUCH higher than those on chapters 1-5!

The Westing Game

Following last week's STAAR Writing Test, my students (and admittedly I did too) took a deep sigh of relief that the testing portion of the year (for my class) is behind us, we took a quick "victory lap" around the field, and we visited about what was to come in my class.  There are two major units yet to cover.  We will be using a novel study of the book, The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin, as a vehicle to get us where we need to be by the end of the year.
The two major units to cover are poetry and research, and I believe this novel will be useful in this pursuit.  Should your student miss any school while we are reading the novel, they may use THIS LINK to catch up on the reading they missed.
You will notice there is a new tab at the top of, titled "The Westing Game."  You can use this link for any resources regarding the novel, including any review material (there is a Kahoot! review for the quiz your students will take tomorrow!).
This week marks the end of the 5th grading period, so make sure all late work is turned in!

Grading Period 5: Week 3 Review

It's hard to believe we're already approaching progress report time in this, now, not-so-new grading period!  Due to benchmark testing, we have not yet had a Word of the Day quiz yet this grading period.  The first one for this six weeks will be tomorrow, and it will cover eight vocabulary terms.  The review video can be viewed above!

The 4th Grading Period Comes to a Close

It's hard to believe the 4th grading period is already coming to a close.  There is just one day left to get in anything that is still missing, and then you get to enjoy a nice, long THREE-DAY WEEKEND!!!!
Study for the Word of the Day Quiz as well as the Writing Rule Quiz.
This concludes two-thirds of the school year... only that last one-third left, so finish strong!!!

Week 2

Happy Week Two!
I hope you had a restful weekend.  Back to work!  This week, we will continue our benchmark review.  Monday, we will have an abbreviated schedule due to our attendance at the Cailloux theater's performance of "Vocal Trash."  Tuesday we will meet for a few minutes in the classroom before moving to the computer lab to complete the Edmodo Snapshot and to work on our menu blogs.  More benchmark review is slated for Wednesday and Thursday, and then we have our weekly quizzes on Friday.
If you haven't yet turned them in, make sure you complete your Christmas Vacation assignment, and get to work on those Kamicos.  Kamico 7&8 will be made available this week.  Those are worth 200 points each, so they should serve as having the most bang for your buck.
We talked about the three different scores thus far in the grading period- make sure you are hovering around the "Probable" column and not the "Problematic" column!
See you tomorrow,
Mr. Mein

Sunday, January 4, 2015

I like to introduce new tools throughout the year that I can use in my classroom to make the learning more engaging.  Edmodo is an educational tool that both the students and I can use to communicate, to assess various skills, and to track progress.  My students will be visiting the computer lab quite regularly in the new semester, and this is one of the tools that we will use quite frequently.  Additionally, there is an app for both Android and Apple iOS devices that I would encourage your students to install on their devices.

Below, please select ONLY the link that is associated with your class period.

I'm excited about finishing this school year with you strong... we're halfway there!

Welcome Back!

Welcome back, Missions!
I hope you all had a very restful holiday, and you're ready to come back and jump back into the swing of things.  We're going to hit the ground running, so please make sure you are prepared for class (Writer's Notebook, something to write with, positive attitude).
See you Monday,
Mr. M
