Hello and Happy Holidays!
We're quickly moving through this year, and it's hard to believe Thanksgiving is next week with Christmas around the corner!  It's going to be here before we know it.  With that being said, you should have received an email from me last weekend about the Learning Journal Challenge all of my students are doing this grading period.  Please check in with your student to make sure they are getting their Learning Journal entries done.  I have had very few turned in to this point!
Students, below you will find the Word of the Day review for tomorrow's quiz as well as the spelling words to review for the weekly spelling quiz.

Week Two is in the Books!

Hello Everyone!
Week two is officially in the books! I am enjoying learning with all my students this year.  Our focus to this point has been nailing down our routines for my class, covering the very basics, and setting up The Writer's Notebook.  The Writer's Notebook is somewhat of a catch-all portfolio and toolbox for your student to use throughout the year.  By the end of the year, it should be a wonderful trophy of what each student has done.  That being said, it is very important that students are maintaining their Writer's Notebook.  Grades are taken based on many of the assignments that should be pasted into the notebook at this point.  Parents, if you're curious whether or not your child is staying up to date with their Writer's Notebook, you can have them bring them home to show you.  Below is a list of everything, to this point, that should be found in The Writer's Notebook and the expectation of what you should find there.  If items are missing, chances are the grade for the item is also missing.  Items with a * next to them designate graded assignments.

Inside Cover- *Welcome Letter
Inside Cover- A Note About The Writer's Notebook
Page 1- *Collection Page- 5 items (cut/pasted, drawn, stickers, etc) about the student
Page 2-3 - Table of Contents (Each item in the notebook should be recorded)
Page 4- Stickers for Sharing- Students are responsible for earning 3 stickers this grading period
Page 5- First Day at Peterson- 13 lines of writing
Page 6-9- Writing Rules of the Week (We have covered rules 1 & 2- they will have a check quiz on this at the end of the grading period)
Page 10- *Memories Page (8 rows filled in across)
Page 11- *Memory of Someone Special
Page 12- Clock Appointment
BACK of Writer's Notebook:
Spelling Lesson 1 (All Regular Classes)
Word of the Day- Week 1 should be pasted in
Daily Oral Language (DOL)- 3 Completed sets of DOL

If your student needs to make up these assignments or needs extra copies, they can come see me after school, and I will be happy to catch them up.

Today, we took our first round of spelling and vocabulary quizzes.  The majority of students have not received their quiz back so they do not know their grade.
SHOULD A STUDENT RECEIVE A GRADE BELOW 70 ON A SPELLING QUIZ, THEY NEED TO WRITE THE WORDS THEY MISSED FIVE TIMES EACH TO BRING THAT GRADE UP TO 70.

SHOULD A STUDENT RECEIVE A GRADE BELOW 70 ON A WORD OF THE WEEK QUIZ, THEY NEED TO RECEIVE A GRADE OF 100 ON ONE OF THE FOLLOWING QUIZZES TO SHOW MASTERY, RESULTING IN THE FAILING GRADE BEING BROUGHT UP TO 70.

If your student misses a word of the day or a writing rule, they can retrieve that information on the right-hand sidebar of this website.  With 125 students, it is very difficult to keep track of what each student has missed.  It is their responsibility to request work that has been missed.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email me for the quickest response.  Otherwise, I can call you back if you leave me a voicemail at 257-2200 ext. 3088.

EXTRA CREDIT!!!!
Hal Peterson Middle School's Team Up Food Drive is under way!  Extra credit can be earned in Mr. Mein's class in the following way:
